Overview:
The OctoLume (aka octolight, octobox) is an extremely versatile light, because it comes with so many accessories. It can be used as a very large reflector, softbox, or even as shoot-through soft "ringlight". The ringlight feature is available by removing the back inner panel, and poking your lens through. You may need to do some additional rigging or use BlackWrap (both available in rentals).
Each light comes with removable silver and gold inner panels, and a removable inside scrim for softening the light even more when you are using the removable front diffuser, effectively making it into an octagonal softbox. Each light also comes with a removeable front grid, which can even be used on only half the light, for extreme control. With the cloth grid installed, a favorite accessory in the film industry, it allows for a light to be soft (wrap-around), while retaining direction and contrast, very similar to a single window light. It can also be used as a side/back/overhead light without having to do any flagging and blocking because of light spill.
With the two sizes, the larger ones are the more popular choice, if the set dimensions allow it. These lights are also an excellent choice if you want a very soft light for a larger or deeper group shot, and/or if you want round, more natural catchlights in subjects' eyes. Imagine a 7' Octolight on each side of the camera! Maybe the 5' above the camera on a boom!
We have two 7' diameter and one 5' diameter Octobox / Octolights. The 7' is $60 per day, and the 5' is $50 per day. Either system includes the head. With the strobe configuration, a special FlashStyx head is included, with teh same 2400 w/s tube as standard Speedo heads. You will need to bring or rent from us a Speedotron power pack (4803, 1205, 04 405). The tungsten configuration is all complete. The heavy duty rolling stands, included with the studio rental, are ideal for these lights.
Strobe configuration
Up to three 2400 w/s FlashStyx daylight strobe heads (plug into Speedotron packs, but not compatible with Speedotron reflectors/ringlights. Can be used with umbrellas or wide angle reflectors, and any 7" Speedo accessory, like gels and grids)
Continuous light tungsten configuration
Up to three 1000W long tube halogen 3200k heads. These provide very bright video / film level output, and the best choice if you are shooting with vilm / video, or need to have motion vblur or very shallow depth of field with fast lenses, or are not comfortable yet in using studio strobes.
